Around Australia in 54 days

2008

Start was scheduled to 29 March 2008,   8 am, in front of "The Swan Bell Tower"   Perth.

Deadline was May the 24 at 00.08 hours to claim the 15.000$ prize,
or before the 24 of May at 01.08 hours to claim a new record!

I had decided to make an attempt on  Eugen Schilters  record of 55 days 17 hours and 8 minutes, for an unsupported bike ride around Australia, .

My trip in 2006 towing a trailer, went so fairly easy, that I was convinced I had a chance beating the record, if I traveled extreme light.

I brought tent, sleeping bag and mattress, and yes - it added 3 kg extra load but also made me independent of roadhouses and accommodation. This made my daily average fairly even, and therefore more practicable.

To compensate for the extra weight and wind resistance, my personal weight was reduced to 77 kg instead of the 82 kg I usual start out with.

Reason to start in Perth:

1. Shorter trip from Denmark
2. Cheaper
3. Going anticlockwise I passed the south when it's not so cold.

Reason to start in April:

1. Out of magpie season
2. Hotter and less rain in the south
3. Allowed me to camp all way around
4. Fitted best according to my job
5. Danish vacation system
