Hey there!

First of all i must say i\'m deeply fascinated by your journeys and i take hat off in your honour.
Now, i\'m planning on going around the baltic sea this summer- pretty much the same route as yours(but it might change of course).
I\'m a rookie when it comes to bicycling and would love to hear whatever recommendations you might have for the trip.

Is 60 days a reasonable amount of time to aim for? What should i be aware of? Any ideas would be awesome!

Tack på förhand
- Vincent

Hej Erik,

Mvh
Knud

Hey there, I\'ve been looking at your trips for a while now and I\'ve been planning a trip across Canada myself.
Most of my trip will be the same route that you have taken. In total it will be a few hundred kilometers more. However, I am hoping on completing my trip in 25 days.
I begin July 1st of this year. Its ambitious, but I\'ll keep you posted if there\'s a new record.

Great Cornel!! Finally someone has picked up the challenge, good luck to you!! Looking forward to follow you as you go. Will that be possible?? do you have a website??

Regards
Erik

Dear Erik,

My name is Michael Young and I am a 16 year old from Brisbane. I am actually planning to ride around Australia in 2010 and raise money for the Cancer Council.

I am just wondering about your trip. There are many questions that I want to ask so I will start with question 1. Do you still have the exact route of where you went? And if possible would I be able to get it?

Q2. Were you sponsored? If you were who by and how did you go about getting sponsors?

Q3. If you are in Brisbane I would really like to meet up with you and talk to you about your journey.

Q4. Is it possible to get some hints about the equipment list?

I\'ll leave you with this for the moment. I look forward to hearing from you.

Met Erik yesterday Friday 18April 13:50 at Austimer (~60km south of Sydney). Erik feeling strong and in good mood. Climed the hills and while stopping in bushland near Helensburg got surprised by rain. On he roadside in Waterfall Lars was waiting and Erik fitted two new tyres with the rain easing but still cold (14C). Some tyre/rim fitting problem but then we three proceeded and in Sans Souci got soaked again by rain number two. Through heavy Friday evening traffic along the airport reached the Sydney Harbour bride now dry for a photo session. Erik booked in a motel at around 18:30 and I parted from him when he was stocking up at a local 24h Service Station

I saw you off from the Bell Tower & rode with you to Fremantle. How are your feet? After the Nullabour Plain I thought you would be looking forward to some hills around Appollo Bay. We thought we may see you in Brisbane when the CTA are going there for a little tour on the 25th of April. Go on your present progress you will be long gone by then. Well Done. Look afer yourself and we will see you back in Perth inside the record. Good luck.

I had the honour of camping with you just before Port Hedland during your last tour down here. You are a legend and inspiration.

We are having an unseasonable hot spell right now, but hopefully it will be all gone by 29 Mar.

I wish you all the best and lots and lots of tail wind!

Hi Takeshi!!

I remember you very well, and have 2 photos of you. You where on a long trip away from your wife. I specially remember when I packed down in the middle of the night you started a little fire and boiled some water I think. Later when passing the bridge in the night I could see your little fire in the distance :-)

Nice to hear from you!!!

Hej Erik,

I read a lot your stories around the world with your bike. You are a real great adventure biker!!
Nex summer I would like to go to Canada, coast to coast. I have 2 questions for your experience:
1) Can I go always on the highway 1? It\'s safe for biker? You advice me another roads? And which is the best period?
2) I would like to pull a trailer like yours. You think it\'s a good idea to pull a trailer in Canada or it\'s better to use my old bags in back on my bike?

Your website has truly been inspiring and great information. I am planning a biking trip across Canada next year and would be interested to know if you found a trailer or panniers better for your ride. Living in Australia I enjoyed reading your journey around the country and was able to identify many of the place you have mentioned as I have done some travelling although not alot on my bike. Any other advise you would care to offer would be appreciated.

thank you

Fiona
-------------------------------------------

Hi Fiona

Thanks for your comment!
I would recoment the trailer anytime if your not in a hurry, it gives you lot of space for what you might want to bring with you and it performes well. If you need to cover many km each day pannies are better, you will probely want to travel very light in that case!

Across Canada you most go west to east, if you want to benefit from the wind whitch most likely are blowing from west to east.

Regards
Erik

Fantastic bike ride and tour of Australia. Did not make it to Darwin - bad move!! Beautiful town - not a big city yet! Wonderful people who would have welcomed you very heartily. Australian center is the next ride - my son and I just finished a school holiday of 1 month around the center of OZ and the rain was spectacular. Everything was green and the colors of the flowers are magnificent. Alice Springs is a great launch pad for a central Oz exploration home base. See you on the next bike ride mate - you are welcome at our place in Darwin next time you visit.

Erik,

You have put together a superb site. I enjoye reading your log from your first Australian \"Lap\" and also looked at your pictures from your 2006 trip. It brought back so many memories of our trip last year. France and I quit our jobs, bought a Tandem, arrived in Perth, turned left and just ...went.
Good on ya Mate. Again, a great site and great trip.

Eric, you are simply great! It is my pleasure to know you and to have you as my mentor (sort of anyway).
We've met sometime in 2001 I believe when I was researching internet before my own trip X-Canada. As a result I basically followed your route (not much choice anyway, but...) in 2002 - 6430km in 47 days.
I hope we meet some day in real and go for a beer or two. Thanks for all your tips and advises so far.
And keep those wheels rolling... !

Today 31 Aug 11am I met Erik and Lars on top of the McKell Av in Waterfall, 43 road kilometres south of Sydney. Erik was in good spirits, asked how far it still is and said he was happy when it\'s over. His face and legs are well marked from the sun and the skin on his ears has peeled off. We then proceded north along the Princess Hwy and after the many traffic lights reached the Sydney Opera House at 1:23pm. Lars and I held up a \"Finish\" banner. But then we had to scratch our scalps as the security guard on duty pointed out to us that we were not allowed to take a picture of the banner with the Operahouse as backdrop...! Then to the Blood Donor Centre just a km away where a committee of about 8 people waited including SBS radio.

I had no idea that it\'s possible to follow you on your current trip - why didn\'t you say so? Mann I\'m proud to be the one who is covering for you while you\'re on the move. Everything is just fine here at Skejbyvænge. We often talk about how it\'s going with you, and now I have something to tell the older people, when they ask - they do that a lot you know. Mostly while I\'m mowing the lawn.

I\'m very glad to know now, that everything is okidoki with you and your trip!!

Cheers mate!

This is an update of Erik Straap\'s race around Australia: I met him at the Fitzroy Crossing Shell Station, in the Kimberly area of Western Australia. He had just pedaled in, arriving around 11:00am to freshen up. He reported, in our brief discussion, that he had started that day around 3:00am and was going to pedal just a bit further on before retiring for the day. He looked in good health and spirits and enjoyed sharing his tales of travel. He planned to ride 160km this day and said that at this point (Fitzroy Crossing) of his journey he was about two days ahead of schedule.
I just returned back to the USA from a 14,000km \'drive-about\' around Australia, so this update is a bit behind.
All the best Erik! Cheers, Alan Glover

Hello Erik,
Congratulations with your outstanding achievements.
It is impressive that you are doing it all by yourself - and with a Bob-trailer.
I remember the Danish record of 80 days being set way back in 1986 by the four Danes. It was four former professional bikers. For every 200 kilometers, there was a tent waiting for them. They had a crew, that travelled by car with the luggage -and pitched the tents for them. Very smart - never had to worry, if the ride should be too long or too short.
But your great ingeniuty and astounding stamina compensates a whole crew - impressing!
Nice to see the pictures, and that you are live - and \"kicking\".
Best wishes for the last legs of the journey.
Kindly regards
hans vilhelm møller

From memory it is flat after Walpole/Denmark for 3000km! Only excption a couple of river crossings around Ravensthorpe plus a one off 1km climb in the Nullabor to Euclea at the WA/SA border. Then all flat again til Adelaide. Straight after Adelaide however are the Adelaide hills which I found very testing. Then comes the Murray river crossing at Wellington; 100m of rest on the ferry (unles you decide to talk to the ferryman!)! Then 1km up and onto the Princess highway! So good prospects! Keep pushing! Great job! Pray for a westery for the Nullarbor.

I wish I had seen a live snake here. I have only seen two dead ones. One of them was green, I dont know if that is a good sign.

Hi Erik,

We are following your progress with great interest on your website. I completed an article for \"The Herbert River Express\" Newspaper which, is based in Ingham. (Where you were when you spoke on ABC Radio). The article was to promote the visit of the Australian Red Cross Blood Service Donor Mobile to that town for four days during this past week. The article went to print on Tuesday July 11 with you as the feature story on the \'Health, Fitness and Fashion\" page with, the headline \"Biking for blood donors\". I supplied a photo taken of you at the Douglas Blood Donor Centre in Townsville. I will scan the article and, e-mail to your Webmaster.

Hej Eugen

6h from MillaMilla to Georgetown! well done!

I used the day to getto MT Garnet, and the next day to get to Georgetown, so 6 h?? Nope

To Normanton should be possible if you start at midnight.

I entered Normanton after 304 km at 2.30 pm, thanks to good roads and a sligt tailwind!

Will be interesting to see how you do Normanton to Cloncurry because that seems to me too much for one day but too little for two days.

I used 2 dayes for the 383 km, and thats ok for me.

Regarding the tablelands Highway an the 377 km, its more than likely I will chicken out on that and take the easy tree way route. Unless off course there has opening a roadhouse halfway he he.

Regards
Erik

Hi Erik,
It was a thrill to meet you at the Australian Red Cross Blood Service in Townsville on July 4th 2006. The photos taken here of yourself have been e-mailed. Your visit to Townsville was supported widely by the local media.
For your diary, you were interviewed by:-
Steve Marshall of WIN Television.
Rachelle Chapman of the Townsville Daily Bulletin Newspaper.
Michael Clarke of 630 ABC Radio North Queensland.
News items (that I know of) were run on radio stations:-
4TTT SeaFm MIX106.3 HOTFM 4TOFM 4K1G

Happy Birthday for today 5th July. I hope that the Cardwell Range was not too taxing on your energy.

Best Regards

Childers on day 6, I think this is good considering you pulled the trailer and started late on Saturday. Starting to ride in the cold and dark morning is probably quite daring but the sun is then the more rewarding! Congratulation to dumping the camping gear. It will however now be interesting what you will do with the 375km Tablelands leg!?
Congratulations so far and hope you body copes with new brisk rhythm. You provide a good show; keep it going!
Cheers Eugen

I have enjoyed looking at your website, it\'s very well organized, excellent links. I\'m impressed with all the work you have put into it. Thank you for sharing so much of your travels. I will also be cycling in Australia this summer, (winter), also leaving Sydney pretty much the same date. I will keep my eyes open for you. I too am a lone cyclist, so far I haven\'t found anyone willing to join me on my trips. I am a teacher and will only have 7 weeks in Australia but this will be my longest trip and I am looking forward to it. The information on your website will be helpful and I look forward to checking your progress. Good luck with your final preparations. I would love to hear any advice you might have for me. Cheers.

Hello, i\'m currently in my final year of school and wanting to take a year next year before further studies. My plan is also to ride around Australia, starting in my home city Adelaide, South Australia, and working clockwise around. Can you please give me some tips on achieving this and let me know when you will be in Adelaide so i can chat with you regarding my quest. Thankyou
----------------------------------------------------------

If you have a year, you shouldent need to plan much, just do it! you only have to do an average of 40 km pr day

I cant tell you when I pass through Adelaide, but might be something betwein 15 august and 1 september.

Excellent route in true perimeter philosophy. The mamouth leg from the Barkly Road House to Cape Crawford seems to my very very hard to do. If you manage to do it don\'t forget to tell me how.

Cheers
Eugen
----------------------------------------------------------
Eugen
The 377 km leg to Crawford, is planed to take 1½ - 2 days, and thats one of the reasons I use a trailer this time = plenty of space for food and water. I make my final desision at the barkly roadhouse, depense of the wind direktion and food situation what I do. As I remenber it, the Barkly Roadhouse dident have much food to buy, so might have to "top up" at Camooweal

Hello again Eric;

I was again reviewing your site in preparation for my trip from Vancouver, British Columbia to Ottawa, Ontario (Canada) and I noticed you mention a tent you used for your Gibraltar trip - a Thule Mini pack tent for 25 dollars.

Question; Do you remember the name of the store you purchased that tent at or the website name.

Hey,

Fedt site.

I would like to come with you in 2006 in Australia. It is 2/3 years that I am enjoyng your web site.
But I do not have probably so many days off and 14200 km in 80 is too much for me! I went to Coast to Coast USA, Italy to North Cape, Italy to Minsk and more but you do too many km each days....I should need more more days. I always dream you trip around Australia (for me maybe impossible) or from Darwin to Port Augusta - Stuart Highway (this is very much possible for me).
I try: Can you change plans. What do you think about a trip in the middle of Australia or in New Zeland.
for the next summer 2005 I was thinking to go to istanbul. Thanks if you will write to me
Compliments.

Erik: Excellent website. You have inspired me to take my first long-distance bike trip from Vancouver, B.C. to Kootenay Lake in the Rocky Mountains, a little more than 700km over four mountain passess. The mountains were very tough and the tempuratures were extremely hot (+37/+38 C during the day), but the trip was very rewarding. Next year, if time permits, hopefully all the way across Canada.

I enjoyed reading your Baltic trip and am interested in doing a smaller version - across Denmark, southern Swedish coast, southern Finnish coast, St Petersberg, then the former Baltic states, including Kaliningrad, follow the coast through a bit of Poland, Germany and back to Denmark. I would like to do this in August/September next year but am put off by the stories of the mosquitoes. Did you find them very bad, and where were they worse.

Im off from Slovenia to Estonia by bike at the end of this month (July04), flying back from Riga in mid Sept. I dont suppose you could give me the address of your friendly inventor in Riga, could you, Mr Lonebiker. I could do with some help packaging my bike for the return to the UK (dont want to carry packaging across 8 countries just to keep Lufthansa happy!) Thanks! Also, to Torsten from Germany: Im British, and find most cycling in the UK not so good compared to continental Europe (cars/lorries not so forgiving, cycle routes not extensive). However, Ive been up to the Lake District recently, and have been impressed with the development of cycle paths there (around Windermere, for example). Maybe things are changing here !

Mange hilsner Jonas

Bare for hyggens skyld. VH. Jakob

Good Read. I am always inspired by people who actually go ahead and do rather than think or dream of these excursions. My favourite bike is my old friend...my Raleigh Sports 10 spd that I have had since I was 21; I am 49 now. That old Brooks seat on my friend is pretty tough leather now. I have travelled around southern Ontario but nowhere near your accomplishments. I came across this site while searching my roots. I was born in Ontario but am of Latvian descent. Good riding in the future.

Eric, very inspiring stories. You have tremendous endurance and my deepest respect. I have done some long rides myself, up to 400km a day, but in perfect conditions and minimal baggage since only on a weekend. (See my website for trip reports and pictures.) Doing this for weeks in a row is just stunning. I enjoyed reading all your trips. Sometimes I wished for more details; unless people have done similar trips they can hardly graps what hardship over 200+km in rain and headwind you simply file away in 3 lines of text. Seems like you average more km every year, so what is next. Around the world in 100 days. Keep it up, you are an inspiration to the rest of us

Hej Lonebiker

From now on, I think I will plan my cycling routes 2 or more years after you do the same route so I can find out what I must do! :-)

I found it very interesting to read about your trip across Canada.
I live on the north shore of Lake Superior and have often seen bikers along the highway and have wondered what it would be like to take on a long trip like that.

I hope you dont have headwind at all in Australia. My wife is 50 years and she did 40 000 km in 13 months.
Now she is doing it again... I`m not so happy but she is in good shape! She is looking new challenges - she was airline pilot before but now retired. She has got few bikes and some facilities but we`ll see what is her next step.

Have a good time with yourself, good weather, no accidents and right attitude - we will follow you!

With best wishes, Jukka

I'm planning a x-Canada trip, and noticed that you took the trans-Canada Hwy #1 for a great deal of your trip.
I was under the knowledge that Cycling was not allowed through the Rocky Mountains on that road. How did you manage to get away with it? I've been advised to take Hwy #3.
Did you take #1 becase of time restrictions?

Hi Erik!

Thank you for sharing your experiences on the web. I felt a bit ashamed when reading your comments about Quebec roads and uncivilized truck drivers. I must admit you're right, our roads are really in terrible conditions and bicyclers are perceived as a nuisance by a lot of drivers in the French-speaking province.

I wish I had heard of your transcanadian ride before, but the medias are more interested in singers and criminal bikers than in sheer athletic exploits by unknown foreigners...

I laughed so hard at so many of your discriptions of your travels! Wonderful and a unique look at Canada from a travellers eye.

I do wish the farmer had let you at least use his barn.....we would have made you comfortable had you stopped here. We have rescued young travellers from Switzerland and from Germany and would have been pleased to have had chance to share your travels.
